BEHIND PHOTOGRAPHS | TIM MANTOANI

| October 17, 2011

One of the many things I love about my job as social media guy for thinkTankPhoto, is reading about other photographers and their work. This story was flicked across my desk and I love it, I hope you will too…

Behind Photographs by Tim Mantoani, is a photographic project to document some of the photographers behind some of those iconic images we all see and recognise from time to time. One of which just happens to be our very own Deanne Fitzmaurice and her image of Saleh [please take the time to read about Saleh here ]

Tim is looking to showcase the talented men and women behind some of these iconic images using a massive 20×24 Polaroid camera – if you’re aware of this behemoth of a camera, you will understand some the challenges Tim faced – There were only two around that he could use, for starters…

I’ve not had the privilege of thumbing through a copy over a nice cup of coffee (yet!) but of the images I have seen so far (Sorry Deanne!) I think my favourite is of Jim Marshall (one of my personal photographic inspirations) and the very awesome Michael Zagaris – you can see that image, and the creating of that image over on Brad Mangin’s blog.

If you have a dollar and you would like to help a photographer make his dream a  reality, please jump into Tim’s KickStarter project right here.

I bet you do get to see some interesting stuff, and this is the sort of book I would never have found on my own, but certainly looks like a great piece of history. Those cameras are also just fascinating to see in action as well…
